Jilly’s Music Room owner Jill Madden purchased the historic building in Akron’s Northside District 10 years ago, and has continued the history of the building as a hotspot music venue.

According to Madden, the building has been a part of Akron’s downtown for 113 years and has a storied history throughout prohibition, the civil rights movement, and the modern day. It has historically been a jazz, blues, and punk rock venue, but now features music of all genres.

“I love all genres of music and did not want to leave anyone out,” Madden said.

When Madden purchased the building and created Jilly’s Music Room, her vision was to bring in original bands and artists as an effort to provide a place to showcase local talent.

“We live in a region with incredibly talented people,” Madden said. She wanted to “provide a place for people to gather and have fun.”

Indeed, providing a music venue for people of all ages to gather and enjoy music is one of Madden’s main goals for Jilly’s Music Room. This goal comes from her love for downtown Akron and the importance of public gatherings in downtown spaces.

“I love being downtown and I think people should be downtown,” said Madden.

She believes that city centers should be vibrant and have plenty of activity. People coming together gives a great sense of community for all, especially during the holiday season.

In stressing the importance of downtown togetherness, Madden also likes to highlight and promote other businesses in the downtown Akron area. She frequents Akron Glass Works, Akron Soul Train and Peanut Shoppe of Akron for personal and professional shopping and events.
